Stream-to-Sea Classroom Science at Kennydale Elementary School

Updated: Mar 2

Classroom salmon grow from egg to fry

Renton Schools Foundation's Teacher Grants in action! Thanks to the Bergquist Family Fund through the Renton Regional Community Foundation and the Renton Schools Foundation's Teacher Grant Program, Kennydale Elementary School launched the Stream-to-Sea program again this year. Kennydale teacher Mr. Allen is thrilled the fourth grade students get this amazing interactive learning opportunity.

Beginning in the middle of December and culminating in June, the fourth-grade class is learning about salmon as they raise them in their classroom. Pictured is a special tank that maintains the water temperature in the low 40 degrees Fahrenheit to reduce the risk of bacterial infections while slowing the salmon’s maturing process to prevent growth defects. When the salmon reach the stage of a small fry, the students will release them into the creek near their school.

Mr. Allen shares how this program will benefit the students and enhance their understanding of the biological world:

“The stream-to-sea program is great for introducing animal life cycles as well as bringing biological interconnectedness into the classroom. By participating in raising the salmon from egg to fry, students connect with the natural world in a deeper way than books or videos can provide.”

Renton Schools Foundation is proud to be part of the process that supports great classroom learning!
