Mother's Day paper circuit cards!

Honeydew Elementary School offers a Computer Science Study Buddies program for their kindergarten and third-grade students. Partnered with Hazen High School’s Teacher Academy students and Computer Science Club, a handful of these high school students conduct engaging lessons at Honeydew for 8 weeks. The RSF partnered with the computer science team in a grant application, doubling the funds received. This grant is now in its 2nd year, continuing to support the success and growth of the program.

Branching off of their recent lessons on paper circuits, Honeydew’s third-grade class created handmade Mother’s Day cards. By piecing together conductive aluminum foil tape, a coin cell battery, and a small LED light bulb, the students made cards that illuminate. The card was completed with a heart-warming message: “You make my heart light up.”

While providing early computer science education, this program allows high school students to gain real-world experience by working with children and creating and executing lesson plans. Gretchen Freer, a senior at Hazen High School who participates in the Teacher Academy program, shares, “My favorite part about working with CS Study Buddies is seeing the kids get so excited about learning.”

With a future in teaching ahead of her, Gretchen actively hones her teaching skills, “I’ve learned that being adaptable is a very valuable skill, especially in teaching. Not everything goes according to plan, and it’s important to go with the flow.”

The Computer Science Study Buddies program simultaneously benefits elementary school students by covering foundational computer science knowledge and building problem-solving skills while also allowing high school students the opportunity to teach in front of a class. This fun, crafty, and educational program equips all students involved with valuable skills that will come in handy in the future.
