P.O.W.E.R. Hour

Updated: Apr 6

Through the RSF Teacher Grant Program, Sartori Elementary School offers 5th-grade students unique experiences by Promoting Outstanding Wellness Education for Ravens (P.O.W.E.R. Hour).

P.O.W.E.R. Hour elevates student learning opportunities through mini-electives such as scrappy robotics, sewing, Spanish lessons, 3D printing, and more. These electives take place during the last hour of the day on Fridays. By engaging all students, P.O.W.E.R. Hour bridges the gap for those who may not otherwise be able to afford or attend STEM camps or enrichment activities.

The scrappy robotics class (pictured below) proudly displayed the projects they worked on during the second trimester of school to the younger grades. They were tasked with creating a robot that exerts some kind of motion with everyday items that can be found around the house. These innovative robots ranged from twirling in circles, cars that honk and light up, and even slingshots. The younger students buzzed with excitement as they looked forward to participating in P.O.W.E.R. hour in the future.

The sewing class meticulously crafted a drawstring bag by harnessing the power of the sewing machine. Motivated by the vibrant fabrics with various patterns and the excitement of making something from scratch, they worked diligently. Sewing is a versatile and handy skill as well as a creative outlet that will continue to benefit students throughout life.

These courses allow students to choose a field of interest and broaden their scope of knowledge while applying learning from past math and science units and equipping them with technical and life skills they can use long after they have left Sartori.

Here are a few quotes from students:

“I'm glad that this school does this because it's a really cool experience”

“Thank you for POWER hour”

“POWER hour is a fun hour to learn about stuff it’s so fun!”
